SCA Photomedia Studio courses cover the full range of visual art practices that make up contemporary photomedia. The Photomedia Studio is a community of creative artist-academics and students who are preparing for an exhibition career or a career in the photographic industry. In this appointment, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will assist Dr Chen in discovering the biochemical steps leading to the formation of the unique pigment chlorophyll d (Chl d) by combining their expertise in biochemistry and molecular biology.

This is an unparalleled opportunity to conduct extremely innovative, one-of-a-kind research that could potentially be revolutionary in understanding how to maximise usage of solar energy. The Fellow’s research will identify and explore the properties of new enzymes which catalyse the precise oxidative reactions which yield chlorophyll d and their potential biotechnological application, and will study the physiological features of the new enzymes at the DNA/RNA level.

The successful candidate will possess a PhD in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology or in a relevant field and have a demonstrated ability in an area of protein biochemistry and gene regulation related to the research project. Experience in the use of research methodologies relevant to investigate the biosynthetic pathway in photosynthetic organisms and preferably in cyanobacteria is essential, as is experience in research record keeping and the preparation of research papers. Equally important will be strong written and verbal communication skills, organisation and administrative skills and the ability to work well both autonomously and as part of a team.

Basic knowledge of photosynthetic reactions and their co-factors is desirable, as are skills in isolation DNA/RNA and chromatography technology, such as HPLC and FPLC. Demonstrated experience in protein electrophoresis, such as native/denaturing-PAGE and western blotting is advantageous.

Dr Chen’s research interests are primarily concerned with elucidating the molecular and biochemical mechanism of the energy-storing reactions in photosynthetic organisms, especially the function of novel photopigments in oxygenic photosynthetic bacteria. One of the long-term goals of her research is toward understanding the origin and evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis.
